Be schlau, eat less cow

Meat is delicious. Everybody likes chicken nuggets, a good burger or a turkey on Christmas.

Meat still remains a horrible use of resources, the food we give to animals is rarely converted into meat. Only 4% of protein and 3% of calories we feed to animals end up in our nutrition. According to the German ministry of environment and a meta-study by the WWF, this accounts for about seven per cent of German greenhouse gas emissions and 14.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. In Schleswig-Holstein, it even accounts for 20% of GHG emissions.

Furthermore, 27% of the world’s freshwater consumption is used for beef production. While beef is the biggest problem in this area as it accounts for three-quarters of the overall GHG emissions of working animals. Also, a total of 83% of farmland is used to house and grow food for them. 27 per cent of the world’s freshwater reserves is used just for livestock. On top of that, a recent study by UNESCO to create 1 kg of steak a cow needs 25 kg of grain and up to 15.000 litres of water

To tackle this issue, we have to cut down on our beef and dairy consumption. As you may know from your own experience, this can be quite difficult, especially older people often struggle with new ideas and lifestyle changes. So we believe that we need to educate young children about this problem so they can make better choices when they’re old enough.

Thus our slogan is: the future of our planet lies on our children’s plates.

The way we want to achieve this is by sending young volunteers to primary schools so they can objectively teach them the facts. These volunteers will be people who feel passionate about our idea and in general about the issue of climate change. Furthermore, these volunteers will get guidance from us for every single step in progress. Starting with how they can get in touch with schools to how they can deal with parents, they might upset.

The material we will give the volunteers

We know that the main problem when educating about this issue is the fact that food is such an emotional topic. We want to avoid conflict between anyone, especially with their parents, by being remaining objective and communicating everything we do and teach very openly with the parents.

With the help of sponsors and our volunteers, we hope to keep this project completely free for everyone participating.
