How can packaging be avoided?

The volume of packaging has been increasing again since 2006 after consolidation at the beginning of the 1990s and 2000s. In Germany alone, it totalled 18.2 million tonnes in 2015. The trend of getting food and drink to go was identified as one of the main reasons for this. We are polluting our environment because of this (especially oceans). Moreover, even recycling is energy-intensive. Waste prevention, therefore, appears to be a better strategy from an environmental perspective. How can people be made more aware of this topic, and/or be persuaded to move away from packaging increasingly?
