The Facebook business model – you are the product (2018)

Many of us regularly spend time on Facebook and spend time using other social media. However, hardly anyone asks how Facebook makes its money. Social media actually mainly earns money through advertising. Facebook has become one of the most valuable companies in the world, and it uses this business model. Facebook knows a lot about its two billion-plus users and is getting better at making money from this. What does this mean for users? Is it a problem that Facebook effectively has no competition?‘Nudges’ could be a way of increasing the willingness to help. A nudge is a method that influences the behaviour of people without having to resort to bans or laws or having to change social incentives. Nudges are becoming a more popular way of influencing people’s behaviour as new laws or regulations do not have to be issued as policy. Nudges could help to overcome individual blocks such as fear or uncertainty concerning responsibility, thus increasing the level of social welfare.

Hey, my name Sarah and I’m 17 years old. Since I love speaking English and developing ideas, the YES project has sparked my interest immediately. Additionally, I love working with people in my age because we get to talk face to face and do not have to rely on communicating with our phones back and forth. Furthermore, social media is a big part of my life. That’s why the topic “Facebook-You are the product” is the best topic we could ever have asked for! I’m happy to present our result!

Hi, my name is Simon Laatz I come from Altenholz and I’m 16 years old. The reason why I joined the YES! project is that I wanted to get closer to a current problem and then I became aware of the project through my social studies teacher Mrs Stender and of course, I immediately joined. After I heard the different topics I focused on “Facebook – You are the product” right away and wanted to learn more about it. Now that we got to know all the issues in the kick-off meeting, I’d like to work with my team on a good solution even more. I’m looking forward to the presentations of the other teams, but I’m also looking forward to our own performance together with the subsequent discussion.
