The mission of the IPN is to further develop and promote science and mathematics education through its research. To this end, scientists work in interdisciplinary teams to investigate the prerequisites, conditions, processes and results of mathematics and science education. They focus on educational processes across the lifespan, taking into account not only the individual and his or her family environment, but also learning groups, institutions, and educational systems. The research interest of the school-related projects focuses on the side of the learners on the one hand, but also on the professionalism of the teachers, the quality of mathematics and science teaching and the conditions of the educational system on the other hand.
The IPN also targets support measures beyond the regular classroom. For example, the Leibniz Association’s educational research institute organizes the Science Olympiads and the BundesUmweltWettbewerb, coordinates the Netzwerk Schülerforschungszentren Schleswig-Holstein, and runs the Kieler Forschungswerkstatt together with Kiel University.
